Yes. Every clear phone case yellows eventually. It is a chemical reaction in the plastic, not a manufacturing defect, and no brand — ours included — can stop it completely. Good material and good habits buy you months; they do not buy you forever.
Anyone selling you a clear case that "never yellows" is overselling. Here is what is actually happening and what you can do about it.
What causes the yellowing
Most clear cases are made of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), or a TPU frame with a harder polycarbonate back. TPU is used because it is flexible, grippy and absorbs impact well. The trade-off is that it is sensitive to three things:
- UV light. Ultraviolet radiation breaks down the polymer chains in TPU. The broken-down compounds absorb blue light, which is what your eye reads as yellow. In Indian sunlight this happens faster than in most of the world.
- Heat. The same reaction accelerates with temperature. A phone that heats up while gaming, charging or sitting in a car on a Bengaluru afternoon is cooking the case from the inside and the outside at once.
- Oils and chemicals. Skin oil, sweat, sunscreen, hand sanitiser, perfume and cooking oil all soak into TPU and darken it over time. Sunscreen and sanitiser are the worst offenders by a wide margin.
Note what is not on that list: how much you paid. A ₹2,000 clear case and a ₹300 clear case both yellow. The expensive one usually takes longer, because of additives, not because of magic.
How long do you actually get?
We will not give you a number we cannot stand behind, because it depends almost entirely on how the phone is used. What we can tell you honestly:
- A phone that lives in a pocket or a bag indoors will stay clear far longer than one that sits on a car dashboard or a desk by a window.
- A phone used heavily for gaming or navigation — which means hot — yellows faster.
- Daily sunscreen use is the single fastest way to discolour a clear case.
- The yellowing is gradual and even. You usually notice it when you compare the case against something white, not day to day.
If anyone quotes you a precise number of months, ask what it is based on.
What actually slows it down
- Keep it out of direct sun. Do not leave the phone on a dashboard, a windowsill, or a table on a balcony. This is the biggest single factor and the easiest to control.
- Wash the case, not just wipe it. Take it off once a month, wash with mild soap and lukewarm water, and dry it fully before putting it back on. This removes the oils before they soak in.
- Wash your hands after sunscreen or sanitiser before handling the phone, or accept that the case is a consumable.
- Do not use alcohol, acetone, bleach or household cleaner. They strip the surface coating and make the discolouration worse and patchier, not better.
- Let the phone cool before charging where you can, and avoid charging it under a pillow or in a hot car.
The home remedies that do not work
You will find all of these recommended online. They do not reverse the chemical change:
- Baking soda and vinegar. Cleans surface grime. Does nothing to the polymer.
- Hydrogen peroxide in sunlight. Borrowed from restoring yellowed retro computer plastic. On a soft TPU case it tends to make the plastic brittle and cloudy instead.
- Bleach. Degrades the case and can leave it tacky.
- Toothpaste. Mildly abrasive. Removes a thin layer of surface and leaves micro-scratches that make the case look hazier.
Once a clear case has genuinely yellowed, it is yellow. The honest answer is to replace it, which is why clear cases are priced as a consumable rather than a lifetime product.
If you want clear that lasts longer
Two practical options:
- A hybrid clear case — hard polycarbonate back with a TPU frame. The back panel is the part you look at, and PC yellows far more slowly than TPU. The flexible frame still ages, but it is at the edges where you notice it less.
- Accept it and buy a tinted or smoke finish instead. A smoke gradient or a frosted case does not show the change, because there is no "before" clarity to lose. If what you actually want is to see the phone's finish rather than specifically to have invisible plastic, this is usually the better buy.
What we do about it
Our clear cases are treated with UV-resistant additives to slow the reaction, and we use a hybrid construction where the design allows. That buys time. It does not buy immunity, and we are not going to print "anti-yellowing" on the box and let you find out in eight months.
If a clear case yellows unusually fast — within weeks, or unevenly in patches rather than gradually and evenly — that is not normal ageing and it is worth telling us about. Even yellowing over many months is the material doing what the material does.
